Random News: October 11, 2022

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s October 11, 2022, and it’s a Tuesday. Here are various things that may be of interest to various people.

  • The 2022 Midterm Election is four weeks from today.
  • Today is also the deadline to register to vote in many states. If you’re 18 or over and a US citizen, with very few exceptions you should be eligible to vote. Your vote not only affects you personally and those you care about right now, but has implications that reverberate into the future.
  • If you want to register to vote and don’t know how, literally drop me an IM here and I will tell you. It’s super easy and takes just a few minutes. I don’t care if you’re 18 or 80.
  • Today is also the 34th National Coming Out Day. If you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, queer, asexual, pansexual, intersex or other sexual/romantic orientation, I want you to know that I am your ally and will always support your efforts to proudly live your most authentic life.
  • Christina Bobb, the lawyer who helped represent the FPOTUS in the criminal investigation of his espionage and obstruction via document theft, spoke to federal investigators Friday.
  • She had previously signed the letter certifying that all sensitive records in Trump's possession had already been returned to the government. That was not true.
  • Word on the street — aka Twitter — says that she testified that she was told to sign the false declaration, and allegedly pointed the finger at former Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran and at least one other Trump lawyer.
  • Knowingly signing a false legal declaration would minimally cause her to be disbarred and never practice law again. It could also result in pretty serious jail time.
  • Let’s talk about other assholes.
  • Senator Tommy Tuberville’s (R-AL) spoke at a rally over the weekend. He said that Democrats are pro-crime because “They want to control what you have. They want reparations because they think the people that do the crime are owed that. Bullshit.”
  • “The people that do the crime” being black people, in reference to his line about slavery reparations.
  • A little note about Tommy Tuberville: he bought his Senate seat with the tens of millions of dollars he made as Auburn University’s head football coach from 1999 to 2008, with the actual work being done by the players, who are unpaid men who are primarily Black.
  • Piece of shit. Go to hell, Tuberville.
  • Some follow-up on yet another asshole… Ron Hererra, the LA County Labor Federation president who was part of the racist conversation with LA city council members, has resigned his post.
  • While city council president Nury Martinez has stepped down in her role, she, Kevin de León, and Gil Cedillo all need to completely resign from the council.
  • Want more assholes? There are plenty.
  • Jim Marchant, who is running in the midterms as the Republican candidate for secretary of state in Nevada, has pledged to secure a victory for Trump in 2024 no matter what happens in the popular vote.
  • Marchant is an election denier, as should be obvious. Nevada, you can do better than that.
  • The Sports Desk is not disappointed in the performance of the Raiders, who were up 17-0 against the Chiefs last night and still managed to lose 30-29. First, they were on the good end of some super questionable officiating calls, and second, no one expected them to come as close as they did. Third, I don’t blame them for going for the win and missing the 2-point attempt.
  • Still, there’s something not right about a team who has twice squandered huge leads already this season.
  • And now, The Weather: “Night Vision” by Vansire.
  • In news literally no one gives a shit about, former Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard has left the Democratic party that she never was a part of in the first place. Thank God. What a horrible human being she is and always was.
  • My favorite quote about this is from Charlotte Clymer: “Tulsi Gabbard announcing she's not a Democrat is like Trump announcing he doesn't have a library card.”
  • Today in history… The Daughters of the American Revolution is founded (1890). San Francisco sparks a diplomatic crisis between the United States and Japan by ordering segregated schools for Japanese students (1906). Theodore Roosevelt becomes the first U.S. president to fly in an airplane (1910). The Duke and Duchess of Windsor tour Nazi Germany for 12 days and meet Adolf Hitler a couple weeks later (1937). CBS's field-sequential color system for television is the first to be licensed for broadcast by the FCC (1950). NASA launches Pioneer 1, its first space probe, although it fails to achieve a stable orbit (1958). NASA launches Apollo 7, the first successful manned Apollo mission (1968). Aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan becomes the first American woman to perform a space walk (1984). The AIDS Memorial Quilt is first displayed during the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights (1987). Professor Anita Hill delivers her televised testimony concerning sexual harassment during the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court nomination (1991). NASA launches STS-92, the 100th Space Shuttle mission (2000).
  • October 11 is the birthday of businessman Henry J. Heinz (1944), activist Emily Davison (1872), first lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1884), racist real estate developer Fred Trump (1905), director/choreographer Jerome Robbins (1918), drummer Art Blakey (1919), singer-songwriter Dottie West (1932), musician Daryl Hall (1946), politician Patty Murray (1950), NFL player Steve Young (1961), actress Joan Cusack (1962), actor Luke Perry (1966), actress Jane Krakowski (1968), rapper MC Lyte (1970), director Justin Lin (1971), rapper Cardi B (1992), and NFL player T. J. Watt (1994).

Well, if you want to know how my day is going so far, I just ran a bag of trash out to the dumpsters behind my building, and a fucking disgusting rat jumped out from underneath and ran across my shoe, so now I obviously have to bathe in Lysol and burn down my entire neighborhood. Jesus fucking Christ. Why did that have to happen at 7:34am? I’m going to go into full-on denial and imagine that didn’t happen at all. There. I’m fine. Enjoy your day.
