Another Monday at Crystal Sands (06.30.08)

You ever have one of those "good news, bad news" days, where nothing is steady but full of highs and lows? That was me tonight at Crystal Sands. The bad news: I seem to be developing a cold, and had enough of a sore throat to cut all the challenging vocal songs out of my set. The good news: when I started my set, I found that while my throat was still sore, my voice was seemingly fine. The bad news: for two full songs, I was silent (GAHHHHHH!) because my streaming computer seems to be developing some... issues, let's say. That sucked. But for the remainder of the show, I felt really good and at ease, and felt my performance was strong. So that was cool.

You get the idea. Anyway, I'm going to be doing some immediate maintenance on the streaming Mac; it seems to be screwing up in other audio-related areas now, so I may be re-installing some software, and possibly doing some disk optimization as well.

But enough boring crap. Here's the set list:

You're Like a Cloud (Zak Claxton)
Fire & Rain (James Taylor)
A Case of You (Joni Mitchell)
Thanks Anyway (Zak Claxton)
Redemption Song (Bob Marley)
The Weight (The Band)
The Sands of Redondo (Zak Claxton)

Thanks to the following folks who supported my show:
Harlequin Randt, Elvis Duffy, Shaylin Morane, Doubledown Tandino, melzi Amat, Carrie Laysan, Ellie Chaplin, Emme Slade, Norge Oh, Bibi Ballinger, Triana Caldera, Grateful Stryker, and my great friend Sandi Benelli!

Two more songs recorded!

I am a somewhat tired but very happy Zak Claxton at the moment. I am back at my home near the beach after spending last night in lovely Riverside, CA, recording two more songs for my upcoming album -- "You're Like a Cloud" and "Thanks Anyway".

As usual, it was a great time working at Sound Sanctuary along with Phil and Bunny. I couldn't be happier with the way things came out yesterday. I arrived just before noon, and hung out with Phil for a short while until Bunny rolled in. We got the drums set up and after a little warmup, dialed in a guitar tone and stared our first track, which was "You're Like a Cloud". I used Phil's Epiphone Casino for the rhythm track. The song became a little less ethereal and more poppy/funky due to the switch away from being primarily an acoustic-driven song to being more rock-based. I liked it a lot. Recorded bass tracks, then did a texture track using Phil's 12-string Danelectro. I mean, what's a song about a cloud without a 12-string, I ask you?

Zak doing his 12-string track on "You're Like a Cloud"

We then tackled vocals for the song, which went pretty smoothly. We were hoping our pal Ralph Torres would make it to the session to contribute some backing vocals and good vibes, but sadly he wrenched his back and couldn't drag himself there, so I took his place along with Phil to do the vox. Finished it up with some lead on the Les Paul, and we were done. I had Bunny turn on the video camera for a short clip of me recording my backing vocal part.

It was already evening by then and we were starved, so next came dinner. We had a delicious pizza, and then it was back to work, tracking "Thanks Anyway". We started with drums and rhythm guitar again, as has been the case of everything we've done on this album so far. But something was amiss; there are a lot of little breaks in this song, and it's not an easy one for a drummer to get in the first few tries. As opposed to having me play the song 800 times or so, Phil had me lay down the track by myself, with a scratch track of guitar and voice. Then Bunny had the not-very-easy task of playing drums over my recording. I believe he did a magnificent job.

Bunny gets in the groove.

After we had a couple of good takes from Bunny, I overdubbed bass on the track, and then went back and re-recorded the acoustic guitar track with my Martin. Then I did vocals and harmony vocals, and finally got out the Les Paul again and did a little counterpoint guitar part. And we were done... a pretty early night for a recording session in that we wrapped and started tearing down about midnight.

We got Bunny's drums put away, and then after saying my goodbyes, I drove the half-mile down the street to the always luxurious Motel 6, where I got some sleep before heading back to the beach the next day.

As soon as I have some clips of rough mixes, hopefully later this week, I'll post them at ZakClaxton.com.

Rocking SL5B... twice (06.27.08)

I had a great time on Friday, when I ended up doing two shows of sorts for Second Life's fifth birthday -- an unscheduled informal show for my friends hanging around SL5B, as well as my actual show on the main stage later that night.

Playing at Bibi Ballinger's fun Music Bus stage near the SLMC area.

I'd just stopped by the campground area to see if any of my pals were there, and I was happy to run into Bibi Ballinger, Sally Silvera, Doubledown Tandino, BabbleGrabble Swindlehurst and some other folks. Someone (Sally, maybe) mentioned that someone should play, and since I had to get warmed up for my show anyway, I opted to take the little stage. After getting the stream sorted out, I started in on some silliness. In fact, I realized that Kat would enjoy seeing this, so during the show, I called Kat live on the air and told her to come over.

Audio Sample: Calling Kat

Evil Zak embarrasses Sally by mentioning her in various songs.

Kat arrives in Sillyville and dances while Bibi practices some form of martial arts.

Then I did a few more tunes, and I think everyone had fun.

The set list:

*Impromptu SL Pals Blues (Zak Claxton)
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic (The Police)
She's Leaving Home (The Beatles)
Ashes to Ashes (David Bowie)
For the Turnstiles (Neil Young)
Plush (Stone Temple Pilots)
What I Got (Sublime)
Tribute (Tenacious D)

*Indicates first time I've played this song in SL

And thanks to Sally and Babble for the tips, you silly people!

At 8:00, Zak takes the main stage at SL5B.

I was needlessly nervous about playing the main stage at SL5B, but that's congruent with my silly fear of playing at new places, be they in real life or SL. Once I play a venue, I'm fine, but the first time usually gives me the willies, at least until I step on stage and I realize that it's a show like any other show. Then I'm perfectly fine.

I had a pretty decent crowd... between the four sims where the stage was positioned, I had about 100 total folks over the course of the show. I was happy that a good chunk of my own mighty fan base was there. It's always great to see their familiar faces, even in unfamiliar surroundings.

People boogie while Zak rocks SL5B.

Song Sample: "Thanks Anyway" (Zak Claxton)

Crystal Sands (06.23.08)

Well, it was a wacky day in SL. Yeah, I know; most of them are, but this one in particular, I think, may have been due to some system resources being diverted to the SL5B celebration. I'm (selfishly) happy to say that despite that, my gig at Crystal Sands went very smoothly -- unlike my poor friends Elvis Duffy and Ictus Belford, who were consumed by crashes and stream interruptions. Gah! Elvis even had the dreaded "crash at end of set" thing happen... always a bummer! the last time it happened to me at Crystal Sands, I was so distraught, I committed virtual suicide, leaving my coprse in plain view during the next act. Thankfully, Elvis isn't nearly as dramatic as I.

But as I said, my show was smooth as silk. Lucky, I guess.

Song Sample: "You're Like a Cloud" (Zak Claxton)

The set list:

Mother (Pink Floyd)
Accidents Will Happen (Elvis Costello)
You're Like a Cloud (Zak Claxton)
Heart of Gold (Neil Young)
Falling Down (Zak Claxton)

Thanks Anyway (Zak Claxton)
I Am a Child (Neil Young)

Thanks to the following folks who supported my show:

Zak Claxton at SL5B -- Friday 6/27, 8:00

Zak "practices" at the main stage site for the upcoming SL5B celebration.

Well, I'm excited to be playing next Friday at Second Life's fifth birthday celebration, SL5B. I'll be up on the main stage at 8:00PM SLT (same as Pacific Daylight Time, for the uninitiated) on 6/27.

You can visit the live music stage (located in the special group of sims that were built for the celebration) from any other the four SLUrls below:

SW side: Second Life Birthday
SE side: SL5B Physical
NE side: SL5B Phantom
NW side: SL5B Hippos

The party holds up to 400 people, so come on over and let's have a great time! By the way, live performers and DJs will be playing all week long, so enjoy the whole thing starting Monday 6/23!

Going back into the studio on June 28!

For those of you who are new to my blog (or the soap opera of my life, for that matter), here's a little background 9I promise to keep it as short as I can, for both of our sakes).

I started playing music when I was a tiny kid. Piano lessons at age three, got a guitar on my seventh birthday, yada yada. Basically, I've played music my whole life, and ended up spending a career working in the music industry. I've played on people's recording for released albums (lots of them), I've played big live shows along with well-known acts, and generally had a good life based on my love of music.

But there's one thing that I haven't done: made my own record! Sure, I've contributed my own compositions and performances to plenty of other people's records, but never my own. Well, we're now going to rectify that oversight.

In January 2007, I started writing songs again after years of keeping my priorities focused on my career and being a parent. I found I'd really missed songwriting, and some pretty good songs were starting to pour out of me. At the same time, I was starting to get into live performances again in a big way. Even though I'd spent years and years performing live with bands, I'd never had the opportunity to pick all the material, or do my own stuff that much.

So, back to the point of this tale: by fall 2007, I'd recorded a number of demo tracks here at my little studio, and decided that they were good enough to want to take to the next level. And I continued to write new stuff whenever I felt inspired to do so. Due to my fortunate circumstances of having made friends with a number of people in the industry, I was able to secure studio time at a great recording facility: Sound Sanctuary Studios, in Riverside, CA. I went in with my pal, multi-instrumentalist Bunny Knutson, to help out on drums, and we tracked the first couple of songs on March 29 of this year.

They came out great. Due to work, family, scheduling, and other obligations, we haven't been able to get back into the studio since then. However (and FINALLY here's the point of this post), we're going back in on Saturday, June 28. I plan to try for recording three more tunes in that day, and if we get two good ones (like last time), I'll be ecstatic.

So, there's a preview of what's happening. In case anyone is interested, I'm going to try and record my songs "You're Like a Cloud", "Thanks Anyway", and possibly "The Sands of Redondo" at the session. You'll hear about this much more, I suspect, once the recording session is complete.

Last note: if you want some 30-second clips of the songs I've done so far at Sound Sanctuary, the music page of ZakClaxton.com is a good place to look. :)

Crystal Sands (06.16.08) & SL5B

First, some exciting news: I've been selected to perform at an event commemorating Second Life's 5th birthday (known as SL5B). I'll have more info soon enough, but I do know that my time slot is Friday, June 27 at 8:00PM SLT (same as Pacific Daylight Time). So that's cool. I'll post updates as I receive them. :)

Second, I had a stupendously fun show at Crystal Sands tonight. I was sad to see my pal Elvis Duffy didn't make his usual 4:00pm opening slot due to a work conflict, but I was actually very happy with our good-sized, enthusiastic and super-appreciative crowd! My voice and guitar were both working with me tonight, and I like it when it comes out good and you don't feel like you have to put a ton of effort in... it just happens.

Song Sample: "For the Turnstiles" (Neil Young)

The set list:

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (Neil Young)
Court & Spark (Joni MItchell)

Zak RL Video: "You're Like a Cloud"

Sigh... my Internet service is down, which explains why I am currently in a cafe instead of the comfort of my own home. Turning lemons into lemonade of sorts, I spent yesterday evening creating a demo video for a demo song of mine. I'll be going into the studio to record this one for real at the end of June, so perhaps someday there will be a real video once it grows up to be a real song. :)

In the meantime, enjoy this!

Crystal Sands (06.09.08)

After a long Monday at work, I was quite ready to do a show at the always-fun Crystal Sands. And fun it was. I opened with a Paul Simon song I'd been intending on playing for a long time, and did some other tunes that I don't whip out all the time. The rest of the gig was pretty smooth (except once again, my old G4 screwed up on me, requiring a restart mid-show). Regardless of that, I had fun, and the crowd seemed to as well. I don't ask for more. :-)

Song Sample: "Sex and Candy" (Marcy Playground)

The set list:

*50 Ways To Leave Your Lover (Paul Simon)
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (Beatles)
Thanks Anyway (Zak Claxton)
Save It For Later (English Beat)

Crystal Sands (06.02.08)

Ah, the month of June has arrived, and with the summery weather comes happy, fun shows. Tonight at Crystal Sands was no exception. I sweat about a gallon, but that's neither here nor there. Besides, you can't smell me in SL, so no harm, no foul.

I managed to get the lovely combination of an SL crash, and then two, count them, TWO stream crashes tonight. Sigh. Despite that, it seemed like folks had fun. I know I did.

A quick note: since Bo Diddley passed away today, I opened my set with the Bo Diddley beat in tribute.

Song Sample: "Heart of Gold" (Neil Young)

The set list:

*Who Do You Love (Bo Diddley)
You're Like a Cloud (Zak Claxton)
Heart of Gold (Neil Young)
Falling Down (Zak Claxton) -- I apparently crashed sometime during this tune, and remained gone through the next one too. Yay!
Down By The River (Neil Young)
Tribute (Tenacious D)
This Afternoon (Zak Claxton)
What I Got (Sublime) -- Stream crashed after the first verse, yay!
Big Bad Bill (Van Halen)
Soul Kitchen (The Doors)

*Indicates first time I've performed this song in SL.
