Random News: August 12, 2022

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s August 12, 2022, and if you can believe it, it’s a Friday once again! Here’s some stuff that is happening so fast, I don’t know if it will be old news by the time I hit the “post” button…

  • Not quite sure where to start. Hmm.
  • Yesterday, AG Merrick Garland made a public press statement to address the search warrant served by the FBI at Mar-a-Lago.
  • He took responsibility for signing off on the search, and spoke in strong terms about the patriotism and sacrifice of the FBI to help combat the calls to violence against them by the far right. I think the main reason for this press event was to head off further law enforcement attacks like the one yesterday in Cincinnati.
  • Garland firmly stated that he’d not planned on releasing information about the ongoing investigation, but that since the former president made many public statements about it, they’re planning on unsealing the warrant information, possibly later today if I understood correctly.
  • There were initial claims that Trump might be making a legal motion to keep the warrant info sealed, but later in the day he claimed that he wanted them released. Keep in mind, he could have posted his copy of them any time.
  • Later in the day yesterday, the Washington Post reported that the FBI had searched Trump’s home for documents relating to the United States’ nuclear programs, among other items.
  • I’m going to leave this alone until after we see what happens with the warrant today. I don’t have to inform you of the penalty for, say, selling America’s nuclear secrets to foreign powers (not that I’m saying that’s what happened, but if…).
  • So that’s all on that. For now.
  • Fucking wow.
  • Congress will pass the climate bill today. Good news.
  • QotD: “I think the first duty of society is justice.” - Alexander Hamilton
  • And now, The Weather: “Lucy’s” by Girlpool.
  • Today in history… Christopher Columbus arrives at the Canary Islands (1492). The US flag is raised in Hawaii to signify the transfer of sovereignty (1898). Alençon is the first French city liberated from the Germans in WWII (1944). The Soviets conduct the first thermonuclear bomb test (1953). NASA’s first communications satellite is launched (1960). South Africa is banned from the Olympics due to racist policies (1964). The first free flight of the Space Shuttle Enterprise (1977). Canada, Mexico and the USA complete negotiations for NAFTA (1992). MLB players go on strike (1994).
  • August 12 is the birthday of UK King George IV (1762), “America the Beautiful” writer Katherine Lee Bates (1859), director Cecil B. DeMille (1881), physicist Erwin Schrödinger (1887), music promoter Sid Bernstein (1918), Guinness Book of World Record founding twins Norris & Ross McWhirter (1925), musician Porter Wagoner (1927), musician Buck Owens (1929), businessman George Soros (1930), actor John Cazale (1935), actor George Hamilton (1939), guitar master Mark Knopfler (1949), musician Kid Creole (1950), rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot (1963), and tennis player Pete Sampras (1971).

That’s all for now. Today might be a day to remember. Enjoy it.
