Random News: October 8, 2022

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s October 8, 2022, and it’s a Saturday. News from a guy in a bathrobe…

  • The Uvalde, TX school district has suspended its entire police force, and the district superintendent is going to retire amid fallout from the shooting massacre at Robb Elementary in May.
  • Good.
  • An Ohio judge has issued a preliminary injunction against a new Ohio law that prohibits abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.
  • Abortion in Ohio is still legal up to 22 weeks of pregnancy, at least while litigation continues.
  • Whew.
  • He agreed with the plaintiffs who said the law puts an undue burden on pregnant women. “You’re restricting her opportunities. You’re restricting her rights. You’re relegating her to a different status,” he stated.
  • In related news, an Arizona appellate court halted enforcement of the state’s near-total abortion ban late Friday.
  • We wouldn’t have to worry about these rogue states and right-wing activist judges enacting draconian anti-women laws if we elect a Democrat majority in the House and Senate who will codify the right to abortion at a national level.
  • Vote please. The elections are four weeks from Tuesday on November 8.
  • Facebook parent Meta is warning 1 million users that their login information may have been compromised through malicious apps.
  • They found more than 400 malicious Android and Apple iOS apps this year that were designed to steal the personal Facebook login information of its users.
  • The apps would ask users to “login with Facebook” and later steal their username and password.
  • That’s nice.
  • Be careful. Side note: I never log into anything using the credentials of another thing. Never ever. Neither should you.
  • While I’m being Captain Obvious, never log into anything via an email link, even if you “know” it’s legit.
  • Lots and lots of ways to get ripped off.
  • And now, The Weather: “All My Friends Live on the Internet” by Scoobert Doobert.
  • The bridge that connects the Crimean peninsula to mainland Russia mysteriously blew up yesterday.
  • A massive truck bomb exploded and collapsed section of the massive 12-mile bridge that had just gone at high expense up in 2018.
  • For those of you with short memories, Russia “annexed” (aka stole by force) Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
  • Kiev isn’t taking responsibility for the action, but they do seem to be in good spirits about “whoever did this”.
  • It happened on Vladimir Putin’s 70th birthday yesterday. Happy birthday Vlad.
  • Columbia University is going to pay $165 million to 147 victims of former gynecologist Robert Haddon. That piece of shit, who sexually abused women under his care (including minors), never served a day of jail time and only had to give up his medical practice.
  • From the Sports Desk… MLB playoff are here. The Wild Card round is a best-of-three series, and so far, the first game winners include the Guardians over the Rays, the Mariners over the Blue Jays, the Phillies over the Cardinals, and the Padres over the Mets.
  • The winners of these series will face the regular season leaders, which include the Yankees, Astros, Braves, and Dodgers in the respective ALDS and NLDS.
  • Let’s go Dodgers.
