Random News: August 31, 2025

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s August 31, 2025, and it’s a Sunday. It’s been a rather quiet morning so far, which is nice. I know we all live in different places with a different ambience from country to country, state to state, city to city and so on. But my Los Angeles-area beachside city — with over 11,500 people per square mile — is inordinately noisy far too often, so as Depeche Mode once wisely sang, I do indeed enjoy the silence when it’s available.

  • It’s not always easy knowing where to start my news each day.
  • I shouldn’t have to explain the reason. I hate the fact that I’ve been forced to mention the evildoings of Fascist Don and his little gang every fucking day, and since the impact of his actions are so broad, it often feels like I have to lead with some shitty story about him.
  • But equally important, there are constantly events going on around the world that merit everyone’s constant attention.
  • And then there are the bigger-picture things that I like to discuss with you… things that are more focused on your happiness and fulfillment rather than your survival.
  • In a real civilized world, this Random News report would be more philosophical and thought provoking than what it is today, by necessity.
  • Anyway, let’s do some news.
  • If we didn’t know before, we definitely know now why the USA hasn’t lifted a finger to fight against the genocide of the people of Palestine.
  • A postwar plan for Gaza circulating within Dumpy’s team of evil — based on Dump’s own vow to “take over” the enclave — is going to turn it into a trusteeship administered by the United States for at least 10 years.
  • And the plan is to transform Gaza into a gleaming tourism resort and high-tech manufacturing and technology hub. But what about the people who were born there and whose ancestors lived on the land for thousands of years?
  • Dump’s team has put together a 38-page prospectus showing that they want to “temporarily relocate” all of Gaza’s more than 2 million population.
  • They’re going to do it either through what it calls “voluntary” departures to another country, or into restricted, secured zones inside the enclave during reconstruction.
  • Sounds like more concentration camps to me.
  • But wait. What if someone actually owns land there? You can’t just take it away, could you?
  • Apparently, those people will be offered a digital token (what?) in exchange for rights to redevelop their property. The token could be “eventually redeemed” for a currently-imaginary apartment in one of six to eight new “AI-powered, smart cities” to be built in Gaza.
  • What the fucking fuck? All this makes me sick to consider. Anyway, this plan was put together by Dump’s team along with Israel, as you probably could have predicted.
  • They’re getting people to invest in this horrifying plan, which is being marketed as the Gaza Reconstitution, Economic Acceleration and Transformation Trust, or GREAT Trust.
  • A presentation deck for investors uses the headline, “The GREAT Trust, From a Demolished Iranian Proxy to a Prosperous Abrahamic Ally.”
  • People disgust me.
  • While we’re on this topic, some related news…
  • Today, a flotilla of ships departed from Barcelona, heading to the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid and activists on board in the largest attempt yet to break the long Israeli blockade of the Palestinian territory by sea.
  • And who’s onboard the ships? Among hundreds of people, perhaps the most recognizable figure is Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. She’s joined by other activists, politicians (such as the former mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau), and journalists.
  • This comes as Israel has stepped up its offensive on Gaza City, limiting the deliveries of food and basic supplies in the north of the Palestinian territory. Food experts warned earlier this month that the city was in famine and that half a million people across the strip were facing catastrophic levels of hunger.
  • “The story here is about Palestine. The story here is how people are being deliberately deprived of the very basic means to survive,” said Thunberg.
  • The Global Sumud Flotilla is a maritime convoy of about 20 boats and delegations from 44 countries. They’re carrying food, water and medicine, and activists on board demanded safe passage to deliver the much-needed aid and the opening of a humanitarian sea corridor.
  • They will be joined by more ships from ports in Italy and Tunisia in the coming days, on the route from the western end of the Mediterranean to the Gaza Strip.
  • Brave folks. Admirable effort, though I find it unlikely they’ll be allowed to complete their mission. I wish them the best of luck.
  • Let’s move on.
  • As we reported awhile back, Dumpy thinks he can get rid of mail-in ballots across the country by his own decree. Earlier this month, the Demented Orange Maniac continued his long-running criticism of voting by mail, falsely claiming that the United States is the only country that allows such a method and calling the practice “corrupt.”
  • He’s not letting it go. Late yesterday, Dump indicated that he could act unilaterally and abolish mail-in balloting through an executive order ahead of the 2026 midterms.
  • Of note: 30% of all votes cast during the 2024 U.S. general election were submitted by mail. I’ll also note that every American overseas — including those in our military — relies on vote-by-mail to not be disenfranchised.
  • There are a few obstacles blocking Dump from waving a wand and making VBM disappear. The biggest one is the U.S. Constitution.
  • It explicitly gives the right to each state to determine the “times, places, and manner” of House and Senate elections.
  • Another roadblock on this area of Dump’s fascist plans: the Senate.
  • While Dump and his ass-kissing House could try and shove some bullshit through, it would require a supermajority in the Senate, where there are enough Democrats to block legislation.
  • Chuck Schumer (D-NY) already addressed this. “Senate Democrats will make sure that any and every measure that would make it even more difficult for Americans to vote will be dead on arrival in the Senate,” he said in response to Dump’s threat.
  • But there’s one other issue, and that’s his own fucking party.
  • Most Republican election officials stay aligned with Dump on topics like voter ID and proof of citizenship, but the GOP has benefitted every bit as much as the Democrats on getting higher voter turnout by allowing mail-in balloting.
  • Regardless, keep your eye on this attempt to stop tens of millions of Americans — including our own military — from being able to vote.
  • Moving on.
  • The chaos at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after the agency director was ousted has resulted in a wide swath of people demanding the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr..
  • One of them is our friend Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
  • Sanders, the ranking member on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, said that he agrees with Dump and RFK Jr. on making the public “healthy again,” but warned that the problem is that “since coming into office President Trump and Mr. Kennedy have done exactly the opposite.”
  • Thank God for Bernie.
  • In an op-ed he wrote for the New York Times published yesterday, Bernie wrote, “Despite the overwhelming opposition of the medical community, Secretary Kennedy has continued his longstanding crusade against vaccines and his advocacy of conspiracy theories that have been rejected repeatedly by scientific experts. It is absurd to have to say this in 2025, but vaccines are safe and effective. That, of course, is not just my view. Far more important, it is the overwhelming consensus of the medical and scientific communities.”
  • He added, “Secretary Kennedy is putting Americans’ lives in danger, and he must resign. In his place, President Trump must listen to doctors and scientists and nominate a health secretary and a C.D.C. director who will protect the health and well-being of the American people, not carry out dangerous policies based on conspiracy theories.”
  • Of note: on Thursday, Sanders called for a bipartisan investigation into the ouster of Monarez, hammering the administration for making a reckless and dangerous decision.
  • We coulda had that guy as our president back in 2016. What would the world be like today in that alternative universe? Pretty sure it would be a fuck of a lot better than the one around us now.
  • Let’s move on.
  • Yesterday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed a sweeping — but pretty much completely symbolic — executive order to protect residents' rights in preparation for federal agents possibly arriving in the Windy City.
  • The order also seeks to bar any federal agents working in Chicago — such as ICE — from wearing masks, and to require them to wear badges and other identifying information.
  • We tried similar legislation in LA, and none of it seemed to matter for shit.
  • Johnson's signing of the "Protecting Chicago Initiative" comes amid growing concerns of a military deployment to America's third-largest city sometime this coming week. The order seeks to ensure that residents know their rights, and every part of the city government is directed to protect residents from federal action.
  • Except, as I mentioned in regard to Los Angeles, there’s no conceivable way to enforce this kind of thing, unless you expect violent conflict between the city’s law enforcement agencies and the federalized troops coming in.
  • And I wouldn’t count on all local law enforcement people to be on the side of their own people.
  • We’ll be keeping an eye on Chicago. The latest reports have troops coming in on Friday. We’ll see.
  • Moving on to a musical note from the Immigration Desk…
  • After a violinist who has played with high-profile orchestras was detained by ICE last week, members of Utah’s music community are rallying in support of his release.
  • Donggin Shin is a 37-year-old pro musician who came to the U.S. from South Korea with his father when he was a child.
  • ICE goons grabbed him at a hotel parking lot while he was on a work trip in Colorado. He was placed in ICE detention on August 18. With a hearing slated for early September, his colleagues from the Salt Lake City area are hoping to send a message to the administration and beyond that Shin, who goes by the name John, is a valued part of the community.
  • Conductor Gabriel Gordon said, “John has been in this country since he was 10 years old and he was brought here by his parents. He didn’t get a choice in the matter. He is not somebody that is taking from the community, but is giving.”
  • Why was Shin arrested? He got taken by ICE’s Fugitive Operations Team, intended for apprehending immigrants who have committed the most serious crimes and are considered threats to national security.
  • And what did Shin do? He had an old misdemeanor impaired driving offense. He’d pleaded guilty to his DUI conviction, served his probation and the matter was resolved.
  • His wife, DaNae Shin, said she got one call from John. “Honey, I don’t have much time. I’ve been arrested by ICE and they are sending me to a detainment center. I love you and the kids, I will be okay, please call our attorney.”
  • She continued, “John is not a criminal, he is an amazing husband, father, and person, and I will do whatever it takes to bring him back home.”
  • Get used to these stories, folks, until we clear out the cancer that’s spreading through the White House.
  • And now, The Weather: “Falling on my Sword” by TOPS
  • Let’s do a chart.
  • It’s the last day of August 1993, 32 years ago. I am 24 years old, a college graduate, working in a career job, and married.
  • In retrospect, I probably should have been less responsible when I was at that age, but I was making up for years of being horribly irresponsible.
  • At this time, my then-wife and I have recently moved into our first apartment of our own, a shitty one-bedroom place on Artesia Boulevard in Torrance just east of the 405. I’ve just adopted a jet black cat from a local shelter. We named her Yoko.
  • Here’s the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at the time. With a couple of exceptions, it’s pretty fucking awful, top to bottom. If I gave a shit, I’d tell you how and why there were two different one-hit-wonder songs with nearly the same title by different bands, but I do not give a single shit.
  • 1. Can't Help Falling In Love (From "Sliver") (UB40). 2. Whoomp! (There It Is) (Tag Team). 3. Dreamlover (Mariah Carey). 4. Lately (Jodeci). 5. Runaway Train (Soul Asylum). 6. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) (The Proclaimers). 7. If (Janet Jackson). 8. Slam (Onyx). 9. If I Had No Loot (Tony! Toni! Tone!). 10. Weak (SWV). 11. Right Here (Human Nature)/Downtown (SWV). 12. Will You Be There (Michael Jackson). 13. I Don't Wanna Fight (From "What's Love Got To Do With It") (Tina Turner). 14. The River Of Dreams (Billy Joel). 15. Whoot, There It Is (95 South). 16. One Last Cry (Brian McKnight). 17. Baby I'm Yours (Shai). 18. Rain (Madonna). 19. Alright (Kris Kross Featuring Supercat). 20. Dazzey Duks (Duice).
  • From the Sports Desk… yes, NFL football actually begins this coming week, starting on Thursday.
  • I have been in NFL pick ‘em pools for about 30 straight years. Since 2010, my pool of choice has been my friend Jess Smith’s “Border Battlers” that she runs on Yahoo.
  • I am the current defending champion, having won in 2024 (as well as 2021, 2018, and 2015). No, I don’t know why I win exactly every three years. It’s probably a coincidence.
  • I love being in the pool. There’s no money involved, but being involved inspires me to stay on top of what’s going on in the league… not just for my team, but every team.
  • My picks for Week 1 are due soon, and I’ve already been consulting all manner of sports gurus to try and figure out what this new season — with tons of roster changes and so on — is all about.
  • So I’m ready for that, and ready to enjoy that process nearly every week from now through next February. If you’d like to play, let me know and I’ll have Jess send you an invite. All you do is pick the winning teams each week — straight up win or lose, no point spread — and then enter confidence points for each game.
  • If there are 16 games that week, for example, the team you’re most confident would win gets 16 points; the pick that you’re least confident in gets 1 point. It’s fun.
  • Today in history… Byzantine Empress Theodora dies childless, thus ending the Macedonian dynasty (1056). King Henry V of England dies of dysentery and Henry VI becomes King of England at the age of nine months (1422). Union forces led by General William T. Sherman launch an assault on Atlanta (1864). Mary Ann Nichols becomes the first of Jack the Ripper’s victims (1888). Ferdinand von Zeppelin patents his navigable balloon (1895). The USA passes a Neutrality Act to try and stay out of the tensions concerning Germany and Japan (1935). Malaysia gains its independence from the United Kingdom (1957). Princess Diana dies in a car crash in Paris (1997).
  • August 31 is the birthday of Roman emperor Caligula (12), Roman emperor Commodus (161), Chinese emperor Zhang Zong (1168), educator Maria Montessori (1870), radio/TV host Arthur Godfrey (1903), actor/educator Sanford Meisner (1905), novelist William Saroyan (1908), journalist Daniel Schorr (1916), composer Alan Jay Lerner (1918), actor Buddy Hackett (1924), actor James Coburn (1928), saxophonist/bass player Wilton Felder (1940), illustrator Roger Dean (1944), singer-songwriter Van Morrison (1945), violinist Itzhak Perlman (1945), singer-songwriter/guitarist Bob Welch (1945), actor Richard Gere (1949), track and field athlete Edwin Moses (1955), drummer Gina Schock (1957), voice actor Dee Bradley Baker (1962), singer-songwriter Debbie Gibson (1970), comedian Chris Tucker (1971), golfer Pádraig Harrington (1971), NFL player Larry Fitzgerald (1983), and NFL player Sauce Gardner (2000).

That’s all I’ve got for now. Try and do reasonably good things today, or at least avoid doing things that make the world shitty. I’m not asking too much here. Enjoy your day.

Random News: August 30, 2025

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s August 30, 2025, and it’s a Saturday. It's way too warm and humid to be in a thick bathrobe, so I write to you on this fine morning wearing some shorts and a t-shirt. I still have my large mug of Peet’s coffee beside me. Major Dickson’s Blend this morning, if you’re keeping track for some reason.

  • For those of you who’d been noting the news that Dumples the Unhealthy Clown hadn’t been seen in a few days, I’ve got bad news for you.
  • He is — at least from what we can tell — alive. Dump was photographed in a golf cart this morning. He looked like shit, but he seemed to be among the living.
  • Still, following the speculation on social media over the past day or so has been heartwarming and somewhat fascinating.
  • I read posts about people putting together playlists for a “He’s Dead” dance party. Don’t live your life so that hundreds of millions of people are planning to celebrate your shucking of the mortal coil.
  • Dump hadn’t appeared in public between Tuesday and Friday… rare for a narcissistic weirdo like him. But unless the White House is using AI (or they’re carting around a body double, or pulling a “Weekend at Bernie’s” where they’re just driving his corpse around the front nine), my opinion is that Dump is not dead.
  • Yet.
  • So let’s do some real news.
  • Yesterday, a federal appeals court ruled that Dumpy had no legal right to impose sweeping tariffs, but they left his tariffs in place for now, knowing he’s going to appeal their ruling to the Supreme Court.
  • The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled 7-4 that Dump wasn’t legally allowed to declare national emergencies and impose import taxes on almost every country on earth, a ruling that largely upheld a May decision by a specialized federal trade court in New York.
  • How did Dump take the news? Not well.
  • “If allowed to stand, this Decision would literally destroy the United States of America,” Dump (or the people pretending to be Dump since he’s dead) wrote on social media.
  • It goes without saying that Dump’s tariff taxes — and the shitty erratic way he’s rolled them out — have shaken global markets, alienated U.S. trading partners and allies, and raised fears of higher prices and slower economic growth.
  • Making matters worse (for everyone), Dump’s government has argued that if the tariffs are struck down, it might have to refund some of the import taxes that it’s collected, delivering a financial blow to the U.S. Treasury.
  • Hey Dumpy, what would happen then?
  • “It would be 1929 all over again, a GREAT DEPRESSION!”
  • Snorrrrrrt. And whose fault would that be, fat man?
  • Legal side note: Dump’s assertion that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) gives him unlimited power to tax imports quickly drew legal challenges — at least seven cases. No president had ever used the law to justify tariffs.
  • We’ll be keeping an eye on that story. If I were a betting man, I’d unfortunately have to predict that the Supreme Court will side with him, as usual, in a 6-3 ruling. We’ll see soon enough.
  • Moving on.
  • Another big setback for Dumpy yesterday, when U.S. District Judge Jia M. Cobb blocked him from rapidly deporting undocumented immigrants detained away from the border without a court hearing.
  • Cobb wrote that the administration’s new policy to broadly expand a process known as “expedited removal” — which had previously been used to deport migrants detained at or near the U.S.-Mexico border — doesn’t provide adequate due process rights to those detained inside the country.
  • Correct.
  • She wrote, “in defending this skimpy process, the Government makes a truly startling argument: that those who entered the country illegally are entitled to no process under the Fifth Amendment, but instead must accept whatever grace Congress affords them. Were that right, not only noncitizens, but everyone would be at risk.”
  • Thank you! And guess what? EVERYONE IS AT RISK. If we don’t fight this shit with every tool at our disposal, Dumpy will be dictator of life, and his children will assume the throne when he dies.
  • Assuming he lives more than another week or two. But I digress.
  • Can we go three-for-three in court cases against the Dump Monster? I think we can!
  • Yesterday, a federal appeals court blocked Dump’s plans to end protections for 600,000 people from Venezuela who have had permission to live and work in the United States, saying that plaintiffs are likely to win their claim that the Republican administration’s actions were unlawful.
  • It was the three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals who unanimously upheld a lower court ruling that maintained temporary protected status for Venezuelans while TPS holders challenge actions by Dump’s administration in court.
  • They said that Homeland Security Secretary and puppy murderer Kristi Noem had no authority to vacate or set aside a prior extension of temporary protected status because the governing statute written by Congress does not permit it.
  • Ha ha, you fucking loser fucks!
  • In news from the Quiet Civil War desk…
  • Yesterday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said the Trump administration has not communicated with his state on a reported plan to send military forces to Chicago.
  • JB doesn’t mince words.
  • Asked about a possible military deployment to America's third-largest city, he said, ”It's clear that, in secret, they're planning this — well, it's an invasion with U.S. troops, if they, in fact, do that."
  • That’s a civil war, kids. With military troops from states invading other states without permission, that’s an action of war. Please wake the fuck up.
  • See, once they get you used to seeing military inside your state, and you accept this, you won’t be ready when they start aiming their rifles at you. So don’t just sleep on this shit.
  • It’s being said that Dump’s invasion of Chicago will start as soon as this coming week, and that the Pentagon is drawing up plans to send thousands of National Guard members to the Midwest's largest metro area.
  • Pritzker also offered his opinion — a correct one, I believe — that Dump’s gambit may be part of a plan to "stop the elections in 2026 or, frankly, take control of those elections.” He also called the idea "an attack on the American people."
  • Keep in mind that unlike D.C., where Dump controls the D.C. National Guard outright, the governors of the 50 states control their own Guard forces except in certain special circumstances.
  • Let’s move on for now.
  • As we’d predicted recently, more states are getting into the redistricting wars.
  • Yesterday, Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe of Missouri said he is calling the state’s lawmakers into a special session to redraw the state’s U.S. House districts as part of the growing national gerrymandering battle between Republicans and Democrats.
  • Missouri is now the third state to officially pursue an unusual mid-decade redistricting for partisan advantage. Republican-led Texas took up the task first but was quickly countered by Democratic-led California, where Gov. Gavin Newsom is asking voters to approve a map aimed at giving his party five more seats.
  • A side note for my fellow Californians: that special election will be held on Tuesday November 4. As a registered voter. like me, you will get your ballot and info in the mail.
  • Vote YES on Proposition 50.
  • The measure currently has massive support, indicated by both voter polls and financial support.
  • Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings just gave $2 million to help California redraw its House maps. Newsom has also raised at least $12 million from roughly 400,000 small donations so far.
  • And Newsom contributed $2 million from his own campaign funds. Other top donors supporting the redistricting effort  include business and technology executives Bill Bloomfield, Paul Graham, John Pritzker, and Andrew Hauptman.
  • Back to Missouri for a moment.
  • Kehoe scheduled Missouri’s special session to begin September 3. He released a proposed new map that targets Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s Kansas City-area district by stretching it eastward into rural Republican-leaning areas.
  • But wait. He threw some extra fascism to this proposal.
  • His agenda also includes a proposed constitutional amendment that would make it nearly impossible to approve citizen-initiated ballot measures, such as the state’s abortion-rights and marijuana legalization amendments adopted in recent years.
  • That’s right. The Republicans are doing everything they can to remove your rights as citizens to vote for your own pathway in life. Instead, you have to just accept whatever morsels they throw your way.
  • “Don’t Tread On Me” my ass. Republicans are weak pussy-ass bitches who want the government to control every aspect of their lives.
  • In other — but not unrelated — news…
  • Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) will reveal this coming week that she won't seek reelection in 2026. Ernst, who at 55 is younger than me but looks about 20 years older, has served in the U.S. Senate since 2015.
  • Perhaps it’s just complete coincidence that this week in Iowa, Democrat Catelin Drey defeated her Republican opponent, Christopher Prosch, in a special election. Dump won the same 1st Senate district by 11 percentage points in November, just nine months ago.
  • And Drey’s margin of victory was by 10 points, representing a 21-point (!) swing.
  • So maybe Joni Ernst sees the writing on the wall.
  • BLUE WAVE!
  • In addition to Ernst, there are other Republicans leaving the Senate at the end of their term, including Thom Tills (R-NC), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), and Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
  • I doubt any Democratic Senators will replace them, but we’re living in unprecedented times and anything could happen. I have hope.
  • Let’s move on.
  • Yesterday, Charles Borges — the chief data officer at the Social Security Administration —resigned after filing a whistleblower complaint about Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employees at the SSA.
  • Ready for some horrific shit?
  • Borges said that the DOGE employees had uploaded a copy of the entire country's Social Security information to a "vulnerable cloud environment."
  • So, assuming you’re an American reading this, that’s YOUR social security info. It’s everyone’s. All of them. Sitting on a cloud server, ripe for hacking.
  • In June, Dump’s Supreme Court lifted a lower court's injunction and cleared the way to allow DOGE to access sensitive Social Security information. Two labor unions and an advocacy group had filed a complaint claiming that allowing the access would violate the Privacy Act and a federal law.
  • Borges is a highly respected and experienced professional. He served as SSA's chief data officer since January. Before that, he worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and served in data handling roles in the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division and the Naval Air Systems Command.
  • He wrote yesterday, "It is never wrong to be morally and ethically right with yourself."
  • Amen. Try and live your life that way, everyone.
  • A little good news forthcoming…
  • We’d reported yesterday that Dumpy revoked U.S. Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris.
  • And again, to be clear: by law, VPs only get six months of protection when they leave office. President Biden had kindly extended that period to 18 months, which Dump then revoked as a typical childish act of revenge. Fine.
  • But don’t worry about Kamala. California has got her back.
  • She’ll get protection from the California Highway Patrol (cue “CHiPs” theme). California officials put in place a plan to provide Harris with constant dignitary-level protection.
  • The decision came after Governor Gavin Newsom’s office and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass were in discussions Thursday evening on how best to address the situation.
  • Harris resides in the western portion of Los Angeles, about a half hour straight up the coast from me, if you find that interesting.
  • And now, The Weather: “So Much Better” by Dean Johnson
  • Let’s do a chart.
  • Every once in awhile, I like to use sources for chart info that’s beyond the data of Billboard magazine. This time, we’re heading back 43 years to August 30, 1982, and taking a look at the top singles from the U.S. Rock Radio Airplay chart.
  • Me? I was just two weeks away from the start of high school. I was a little nervous, and not only for the expected reasons.
  • Due to a zoning change, I was not going to the same high school as 95% of my middle school graduating class. So at first, I was like, “No one will know me there,” said in a forlorn and self-pitying voice.
  • But then, after thinking it through a little, I was like, “No one will know me there!” in the way that I could be whoever I wanted to be, with no preconceptions other than those of the few kids who were in my same school zoning situation.
  • It all worked out. Here’s the chart.
  • 1. Everybody Wants You (Billy Squier). 2. Think I'm In Love (Eddie Money). 3. I Ran (A Flock of Seagulls). 4. Hold Me (Fleetwood Mac). 5. You've Got Another Thing Coming (Judas Priest). 6. Paperlate (Genesis). 7. Eye Of The Tiger (The Theme From Rocky III) (Survivor). 8. Abracadabra (The Steve Miller Band). 9. Burning Down One Side (Robert Plant). 10. Gypsy (Fleetwood Mac). 11. Still In The Game (Steve Winwood). 12. Somebody's Baby (Jackson Browne). 13. Chain Lightning (38 Special). 14. Party Town (Glenn Frye). 15. Should I Stay Or Should I Go? (The Clash). 16. Change (John Waite). 17. Wasted On The Way (Crosby, Stills and Nash). 18. Enough Is Enough (April Wine). 19. Stillness Of The Night (REO Speedwagon). 20. Pledge Pin (Robert Plant).
  • From the Sports Desk… a fascinating stat to watch as baseball’s regular season winds down.
  • For just the third time in history, three or more MLB players have 45 or more home runs before the start of September.
  • In 1998, it was Mark McGwire, Ken Griffey Jr., Sammy Sosa, and Greg Vaughn. In 2001, it was Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Luis Gonzalez.
  • And here in 2025, it’s Cal Raleigh (50), Kyle Schwarber (49), and Shohei Ohtani (45). That’s exciting shit!
  • Today in history… Titus ends the siege of Jerusalem after destroying Herod's Temple (70). Guru Ram Das becomes the Fourth Sikh Guru/Master (1574). HMS Pandora sinks after having run aground on the Great Barrier Reef (1791). Melbourne, Victoria, Australia is founded (1835). The city of Houston,TX is founded (1836). Germans defeat the Russians in the WWI Battle of Tannenberg (1914). The Queen Mary wins the Blue Riband with the fastest transatlantic crossing (1936). The Moscow–Washington hotline between the leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union goes into operation (1963). Thurgood Marshall is confirmed as the first African American Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1967). President Mohammad-Ali Rajai and Prime Minister Mohammad-Javad Bahonar of Iran are assassinated in a bombing (1981). Space Shuttle Discovery takes off on its maiden voyage (1984). The 11-day Ruby Ridge standoff ends with Randy Weaver surrendering to federal authorities (1992). The last remaining American troops leave Afghanistan, ending U.S. involvement in the war (2021).

Random News: August 29, 2025

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s August 29, 2025, and if you can believe it, it’s a Friday once again! I'd be happy right now about any weekend; the fact that it’s a three-day weekend here in the USA, with Labor Day on Monday, makes it all the more sweet.

  • For my final (for now) discussion on the possible forms of a modern civil war in the USA, I want to bring up the fact that this country is far different than it was in 1861, when the previous civil war began.
  • For one thing, a contemporary war within the USA might not involve guns and troops, or at least not in the way you expect.
  • Instead, imagine entire infrastructures shut down by attacks on satellites, or malicious code being introduced to critical systems… water, electrical power, data, banks and so on.
  • Imagine economic war, with the states that generate the most money cutting off funds to those that generate little on their own.
  • Imagine the highly expanded role of corporate — rather than political — entities. Here in 2025, would you rather go up against West Virginia… or against Apple, Google, and Microsoft? There’s no telling how these powerful entities might take sides in such a previously unheard-of kind of fight.
  • But removing access to phones, TV, and Internet would have a faster impact than sending armed military into any location.
  • My point being is that when people like me (and many others) talk about the idea of civil war in the 21st century, it might be different than whatever you envision.
  • But for now, let’s say something happens like Dump chooses to defy Illinois Governor JB Pritzker — who commands the Illinois National Guard — or to federalize reservists in the absence of an unusual emergency… these actions would represent another step toward strongman rule.
  • Keep in mind that what Dump is trying to normalize now is not only not normal; it’s illegal.
  • The president has the authority to deploy the National Guard over the objections of a state governor only in the rarest of situations.
  • Title 10 of the US Code allows the president to deploy the reservists in the case of invasion, to suppress rebellion, or to execute the laws of the United States. None of those conditions seem to accurately describe the current situation in Chicago, Baltimore, or even Washington, D.C..
  • And yet there are currently thousands of National Guard troops — all from red states  — who are locked and loaded in Democratic cities, and more on the way.
  • Add the dangers posed by armed right-wing civilians and militias, along with the nearly 1,600 January 6 felons freed from jail or prison by Dump on Inauguration Day, and it feels like my prediction of escalating violence and civil war isn’t as kooky as it may have first sounded.
  • All it takes is for one undisciplined soldier, or one citizen who’s been pushed past their limit, to squeeze a trigger one time. And then you have the mass casualty event that potentially leads to open warfare.
  • Dump knows all this. That’s why he stated earlier this week that, “A lot of people are saying, ‘Maybe we’d like a dictator.’”
  • Because the one thing that would save Dump is being in a situation where he has a reason to declare martial law and cancel the 2026 elections entirely.
  • You have to stop reacting to each individual outrage and start thinking like a chess player — looking multiple moves ahead — if you intend to survive whatever is coming next.
  • May the odds be ever in your favor.
  • Let’s move on.
  • Sort of.
  • Dumpy’s plan to send the U.S. military into Chicago may happen as soon as next week.
  • The Old Orange Ass and his aides have been ramping up their shit talking about Chicago over policies that limit cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration enforcement.
  • Dump already tried suing Chicago over its so-called sanctuary policies, but the case was dismissed when a judge ruled the federal government lacked the legal standing to bring the challenge.
  • That Bloated Piece of Shit also threatened to withhold federal funding to Chicago… which was then also blocked by a judge.
  • So now, because Dump has nothing else to use as a weapon, the anticipated operations in Chicago are expected to be at a larger scale, using personnel from ICE, CBP, and possibly other agencies.
  • And yes, they are also preparing the National Guard to help if a peacekeeping presence is needed, similar to what unfolded in Los Angeles following our ICE protests here.
  • Let’s move on.
  • The craziness going on at the Centers for Disease Control is unprecedented.
  • After Susan Monarez was suddenly fired from her position as CDC director just weeks after being sworn in, her dismissal set off a wave of resignations.
  • As you’re probably aware, the mass resignation of senior officials at the CDC is a result of the controversial new policies announced by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr..
  • Yesterday’s walkout at the CDC included dozens of staff members and leaders. Staff began their "clap out" protest — where staffers march, hold signs, and clap — just outside the CDC's Atlanta headquarters to support staff who had resigned.
  • Demetre Daskalakis, who was director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said recent policy changes surrounding the COVID vaccine threatened lives and there had been an intentional eroding of trust in low-risk vaccines.
  • Other departing officials include CDC chief medical officer Debra Houry and Daniel Jernigan, director of the CDC's National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.
  • More than 750 HHS employees went public last week with a letter sent to Kennedy and Congress, accusing him of contributing to harassment and violence against government employees.
  • And then yesterday, Dump chose RFK Jr.’s pal Jim O’Neill, currently the deputy secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, as interim leader of the CDC.
  • It’s thought that O’Neill is much more like to enact the dangerous policies that Monarez balked at (and was fired for not doing). Primarily, this involves a complete decimation of federal vaccine policy.
  • While Monarez refused to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives, O’Neill will gladly do so. Can you imagine bringing a child into the world right now in the USA, knowing they might not have access to the vaccines that allowed us to have lifespans beyond 40 years?
  • Sad. Let’s move on.
  • As we reported yesterday, DHS has begun moving detainees out of the "Alligator Alcatraz” concentration camp days after a federal judge ruled that parts of the facility must be dismantled.
  • It’s not like they’re being let go. The detainees are being transferred to other “immigration detention centers.”
  • They said, "DHS is complying with this order and moving detainees to other facilities. We will continue to fight tooth-and-nail to remove the worst of the worst from American streets.”
  • The “worst of the worst” being people who aren’t white, of course. But I hope Dumpy is so mad about his favorite concentration camp that his blood pressure goes sky high.
  • Side note: Florida taxpayers could be on the hook for $218 million the state spent to convert the remote training airport in the Everglades into a concentration camp that can’t be used.
  • The Florida Division of Emergency Management will lose most of the value of the $218 million it has invested in making the little-used airport suitable for a detention center. And as of late July, state officials had already signed more than $245 million in contracts for building and operating the facility, which officially opened July 1.
  • That’s what you get for doing illegal shit. And now you folks in Florida can have that fee taken right out of the taxes you pay. What, you thought Dumpy was going to pay for this? Nope.
  • More news from the Immigration/Fascism Desk…
  • Two Southern California medical center employees involved in an altercation with federal agents during a July immigration enforcement operation were indicted this week by a federal grand jury.
  • Jose de Jesus Ortega, 38, of Highland, CA and Danielle Nadine Davila, 33, of Corona, CA face one felony count of assaulting, resisting, and impeding a federal officer in the altercation captured on video July 8 in Ontario, about 50 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
  • We discussed it at the time. That’s when ICE goons were conducting operations in Ontario when they were following a truck that turned into a surgery center parking lot. Two of the three men ran away and a third was "partially detained" near the surgery center entrance.
  • He ran inside crying and begging for help. That’s when Ortega and Davila, both dressed in medical scrubs, came to his aid.
  • What did they do to catch felony charges? Davila wedged herself between the officer and his prey. Ortega held back the ICE goon by grabbing his arm and his vest.
  • More immigration/fascism news, this time a follow-up on a story we reported yesterday.
  • Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) has called for the Dump administration to provide “immediate answers” about reports that two firefighters were detained by border agents as they were responding to a wildfire in the state.
  • Federal immigration authorities on Wednesday staged an operation on the scene of the Bear Gulch fire, a nearly 9,000-acre blaze in the Olympic national forest, where they arrested two people who were part of a contract firefighting crew. The fire is the largest currently burning in the state.
  • Many of the firefighters being interrogated were members of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla tribes. Indigenous people whose ancestors lived in this area for 10,000 years.
  • Authorities made the firefighters line up to show ID. One firefighter told a reporter that he was not permitted to say goodbye to their detained colleagues.
  • Washington state leaders are furious. Murray, who has been Washington’s senator since 1993, said, “Here in the Pacific Northwest, wildfires can burn and have burned entire towns to the ground. We count on our brave firefighters, who put their lives on the line, to keep our communities safe. This new Republican policy to detain firefighters on the job is as immoral as it is dangerous. What’s next? Will Trump start detaining immigrant service members? Or will he just maintain his current policy of deporting Purple Heart veterans?”
  • Moving on.
  • Some breaking news courtesy of the Asshole-in-Chief.
  • This morning, Dumpy revoked U.S. Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris.
  • Before you hit the fucking roof about this, be aware that vice presidents typically only get six months of protection when they leave office. It was in 2008 that Congress passed legislation to authorize the Secret Service to protect former vice presidents, their spouses, and their children under 16 years old for up to six months after the vice president’s term has ended.
  • However, President Joe Biden had signed an executive memorandum before leaving office that extended Harris’ protection to 18 months.
  • Anyway, Dump being an asshole is hardly news, so I’ll just leave it at that.
  • Moving on.
  • Speaking of Biden, here’s a little flashback to a statement made during his presidency by now-Homeland Security secretary (and former South Dakota governor) Kristi Noem, the lady who shoots puppies.
  • “If Joe Biden federalizes the National Guard, that would be a direct attack on states' rights. Over the last several years, we've seen Democrats try to take away our Freedoms of religion, assembly, and speech. We can't let them take away our right to defend ourselves, too. South Dakota defends the Constitution.”
  • I had to laugh when Gov. Gavin Newsom reposted her statement recently, adding, “This aged well.”
  • Obviously, Noem feels much differently now that Dump has done exactly what she’d accused Biden of doing (when he didn’t).
  • Let’s keep moving on.
  • I’m trying to not harp on Wednesday’s horrific mass shooting in Minneapolis. Nothing I say here will make a damn bit of difference in encouraging the USA to enact more sane gun laws.
  • But I will mention the cruel irony that one of the young victims remains in critical condition at the same hospital where her mother works as a pediatric critical care nurse.
  • Twelve-year-old Sophia Forchas was in her first week in seventh grade when the attack occurred. Fucking awful.
  • And every so often, I feel compelled to repost poet Brian Bilston’s masterful work…
  • England is a cup of tea. / France, a wheel of ripened brie. / Greece, a short, squat olive tree. / America is a gun.
  • Brazil is football on the sand. / Argentina, Maradona's hand. / Germany, an oompah band. / America is a gun.
  • Holland is a wooden shoe. / Hungary, a goulash stew. / Australia, a kangaroo. / America is a gun.
  • Japan is a thermal spring. / Scotland is a highland fling. / Oh, better to be anything / than America as a gun.
  • Moving on.
  • I think it’s time to recognize an AOTDOTD (Asshole of the Day Other Than Dump). Today it’s James “Jimmy” Yokeley, a Republican North Carolina election official.
  • And this shit is super weird; warning you ahead of time.
  • Yokeley has resigned after being arrested for putting illicit drugs into ice cream that his granddaughters were consuming.
  • Here’s the super weird part. He flagged down an officer at a Sheetz gas station in Surry County, NC and told the cop that his two granddaughters had found pills in ice creams purchased at a nearby Dairy Queen.
  • With me so far? The girls had not ingested any of the substances, which was good, because the pills were later determined to contain MDMA and cocaine.
  • But when police reviewed video footage, they saw Yokeley himself placing the pills in the ice creams. He had been acting as the girls' guardian for the weekend.
  • He was arrested and charged with contaminating food or drink with a controlled substance, felony child abuse, and possession of a Schedule I narcotic. He later posted a $100,000 secured bond.
  • What a fucking weirdo asshole. You have to wonder what he was trying to pull here. Yokeley had been selected to lead the Surry County NC Board of Elections just this past June.
  • Moving on.
  • A note from the Entertainment Desk…
  • Saturday Night Live is doing some major shakeups, which is something that show runner Lorne Michaels had said would be happening in advance of their 51st year.
  • Cast members Devon Walker, Emil Wakim, Heidi Gardner, and Michael Longfellow have all been let go from the show, and there may still be more coming.
  • SNL Season 51 will premiere October 4 on NBC.
  • And now, The Weather: “Oh Well” by flypaper
  • Let’s do a chart.
  • It’s 57 years ago, at the end of August 1968. I haven’t even been conceived yet; I will be born the following June. Where am I?
  • Here’s the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart at the time. Some good shit on here, no doubt. Oh, and check this out: Cream, Aretha Franklin, and The Doors each have two albums in the top 20 at the same time; Simon & Garfunkel have three. That’s just fucking nuts.
  • 1. Wheels Of Fire (Cream). 2. Time Peace/The Rascals' Greatest Hits (The Rascals). 3. Aretha Now (Aretha Franklin). 4. Waiting For The Sun (The Doors). 5. Beat Of The Brass (Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass). 6. Disraeli Gears (Cream). 7. The Graduate (Soundtrack). 8. Realization (Johnny Rivers). 9. Bookends (Simon & Garfunkel). 10. Feliciano! (Jose Feliciano). 11. Steppenwolf (Steppenwolf). 12. Are You Experienced? (Jimi Hendrix). 13. Wish It Would Rain (The Temptations). 14. Look Around (Sergio Mendes). 15. Aretha: Lady Soul (Aretha Franklin). 16. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme (Simon & Garfunkel). 17. The Promise Of A Future (Hugh Masekela). 18. Honey (Bobby Goldsboro). 19. Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison (Johnny Cash). 20. The Doors (The Doors).

  • From the Sports Desk… while NFL football resumes in less than a week — with the Cowboys facing the Eagles on Thursday September 4 and then the Chiefs at the Chargers on Friday September 5 — the MLB season is winding down and there are some exciting playoff races going on.
  • If baseball’s playoffs were to start today, here’s how they’d go.
  • In the American League, the two top teams — Blue Jays (1) and Tigers (2) would have a bye and advance directly to the Division Series. The Wild Card Series would have the Red Sox (3) facing the Mariners (6), and the Astros (4) would face the Yankees (5).
  • In the National League, the Brewers (1) and the Phillies (2) would have the bye, and the Dodgers (3) would face the Mets (6), and the Cubs (4) would face the Padres (5) in the Wild Card.
  • That being said, many of these teams are just a game or two apart in the standings, and every win and loss will impact the playoff seedings.
  • And there are still about 25 regular season games for each of them to play. A lot of things can — and will — happen at the tail end of the season.
  • Today in history… Copper coins are minted in Japan (708). The city of Nuuk, Greenland is founded (1728). American forces defeat the British and Iroquois forces at the Battle of Newtown (1779). Massachusetts farmers have an armed uprising against high taxes and debts, called Shays’ Rebellion (1786). Michael Faraday discovers electromagnetic induction (1831). Gottlieb Daimler patents the world's first internal combustion motorcycle, the Reitwagen (1885). The Goodyear tire company is founded (1898). The Beatles perform their last ticketed concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco (1966). Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union suspends all activities of the Soviet Communist Party (1991). Netflix is launched as an internet DVD rental service (1997). Hurricane Katrina devastates the Gulf Coast, killing up to 1,836 people and causing $125 billion in damage (2005).
  • August 29 is the birthday of physician/philosopher John Locke (1632), physician/writer Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (1809), engineer Charles F. Kettering (1876), actress Ingrid Bergman (1915), saxophonist/composer Charlie Parker (1920), businesswoman/philanthropist Iris Apfel (1921), singer-songwriter Dinah Washington (1924), soldier/politician John McCain (1936), actor Elliot Gould (1938), director Joel Schumacher (1939), press secretary/activist James Brady (1940), singer-songwriter Michael Jackson (1958), actress Rebecca De Mornay (1959), astronaut Chris Hadfield (1959), SCOTUS justice Neil Gorsuch (1967), bass player/singer-songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello (1968), and MLB player Noah Syndergaard (1992).

There’s always more news. And by the way, I’m usually quite aware of the stories I don’t cover, usually because of time limitations, but sometimes because I don’t feel it’s something that has enough of a widespread importance that it’s applicable here. Or — as I readily admit — my news has a US-centric focus, and I don’t always include important news from other places around the world. But I do try and get in as much as I can in the time that I have. That’s also what I do in life. Enjoy your day.

Random News: August 28, 2025

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s August 28, 2025, and it’s a Thursday for some reason. Here in the USA, we have a holiday weekend coming up. Labor Day is on Monday, which we’ll be talking about over the weekend. For now, just trying to slog through a whole bunch of work before three blissful days off.

  • Let's continue our discussion on whether or not the United States is already in the midst of a quiet Civil War… one that may or may not remain quiet as time goes by.
  • Unlike the previous U.S. Civil War, where the sides were simply geographical — north versus south, with the southern states having seceded from the USA and formed their own Confederacy. This one would be quite a bit different.
  • First, the states aligned to stop the spread of fascism via Dump are not in adjoining locations. That list as of today would definitely include California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Illinois, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Maryland.
  • I base this list on states where the governors and large city mayors have made recent statements and actions where they directly challenge Dump and refuse to enact his cruel policies. I’m not talking about typical political speech.
  • A good example is Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who on Monday told Dump publicly, “Do not come to Chicago. You are neither wanted here nor needed here.”
  • Statements like that in U.S. history are rare. The last times they happened were during the run-up to the Civil War, and around the time of federal enforcement of civil rights laws.
  • I’d find it likely that these states would potentially be joined by Vermont, New Mexico, Colorado, Hawaii, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, and possibly Virginia.
  • Some states, based on their demographics and past patterns, would remain neutral. This would include North Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, and others.
  • And the states who would be our Dump-ass kissing opposition/enemies would include Texas, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Montana, Missouri, Louisiana, South Carolina, and others.
  • But — to be extra obvious here — not every person in every state feels the same way. There are plenty of conservatives in California. There are many, many liberals in Texas.
  • So the type of Civil War that happened in the 1860s would not and could not happen in a similar way today.
  • That Civil War officially began when South Carolina seceded from the USA and attacked federal forces at Charleston’s Fort Sumter.
  • A little over 100 years later, in 1970, it was Ohio National Guard troops who fired on peaceful students at Kent State University, killing four.
  • If something like that happens today, with a mass casualty event started by Dump’s troops… it’s hard to say what the next events would entail. But they wouldn’t be good.
  • More thoughts on the potential 21st century Civil War in coming days.
  • Let’s do some news.
  • As you’re all aware by now, a piece of shit human being killed two children and shot 17 others at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN yesterday morning.
  • 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire through the windows of the church, hitting children and worshippers attending Mass inside.
  • So if thoughts and prayers were the solution to gun violence, we’d know it, since these innocent people were literally praying while being shot.
  • If metal detectors at schools and churches was the solution, then what do you do when the killer never even enters the building and commits murder through the windows, as Westman did here?
  • If mental health is the issue, how is it that this happens so extremely rarely in other countries? Is mental health only a problem in the USA?
  • And if so, why do Republicans continually deny funding at federal, state, and lo0cal levels for better mental health services?
  • The problem is the guns.
  • Westman, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, used a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol to open fire into the pews. She purchased the weapons used in yesterday’s shooting legally. Westman had no extensive criminal history
  • I was always told by NRA-type people that our access to high-powered, high-capacity weaponry was intended to let the citizens rise up against a tyrannical government.
  • But we have a tyrannical fascist dictator in charge, and no gun owner is doing shit. So just stop with that bullshit.
  • The only bright news out of any of this fucking horror show: out of the 19 people who were shot (including 16 children ages 6 to 15 and three adults in their 80s), 17 of those injured are expected to survive.
  • But don’t let anyone tell you some other story: the problem is the fucking guns.
  • Let’s move on.
  • A top Florida official says the state-run concentration camp (or “immigration detention facility” if you’re a Dump supporter) dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” will likely be empty in a matter of days.
  • In a message sent to a rabbi who was providing chaplaincy services at the facility, Florida Division of Emergency Management Executive Director Kevin Guthrie said “we are probably going to be down to 0 individuals within a few days,” implying there would soon be no need for the services.
  • The facility was rapidly constructed two months ago with the goal of holding up to 3,000 detainees as part of Dumpy’s push to deport people who are allegedly in the U.S. illegally.
  • At one point, it held almost 1,000 detainees. Three lawsuits challenging practices at the detention center have been filed, including one that estimated at least 100 detainees who had been at the facility have been deported. Others have been transferred to other immigration detention centers.
  • Let’s move on with another story about people being held unjustly by the state.
  • Kristal Rios Esquivel was arrested August 20. She was allegedly trying to enter a restricted staff entrance at a birdhouse at the National Zoo in Northwest Washington, D.C..
  • And even though the Justice Department had decided not to seek pretrial detention, Rios Esquivel was mistakenly held in jail for a week.
  • U.S. District Judge Zia Faruqui said Rios Esquivel should have appeared before a federal magistrate judge on August 22, but "federal authorities did not bring Rios Esquivel to court until August 25, 2025."
  • On Tuesday, Rios Esquivel's defense lawyer filed a motion claiming she had not been released and was being illegally detained. A defense attorney at one point filed a court document that read, "HELP!!!!"
  • Judge Faruqui diagnosed the problem, writing, "The Department of Corrections informed defense counsel that it could not comply with this Court's order because there was a 'hit' on Esquivel Rios in the warrant system. However, that warrant was the very warrant for which she appeared on August 25."
  • The judge called this an incident of "false imprisonment" and noted it was not the first time it had happened this year. One former Justice Department attorney said the handling of the arrest and detention of Kristal Rios Esquivel is creating a sense of "foreboding."
  • That foreboding is via the actions of a fascist government who jails people without allowing them the chance to defend themselves as our laws require.
  • Let’s be honest: Rios Esquivel was held in jail for a week — for no reason — because she’s not white. That’s how things are in Dump’s Fascist States of America.
  • And speaking of people who aren’t white…
  • In Shelton, WA, a team of firefighters was stopped and interrogated by ICE. These people put their own lives at risk, standing on the frontlines of dangerous wildfires to protect lives and homes.
  • But instead of being treated as heroes, they were rounded up as suspects. Among them were members of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla tribes. These are Indigenous peoples whose ancestors have lived on this land for thousands of years before the United States ever existed. Yet they were interrogated about their immigration status.
  • These Native firefighters, rooted in the deepest history of this land, were running toward danger for the sake of others, but were stopped and questioned as if they did not belong.
  • And on a bigger picture, it’s worth noting: how can any person be “illegal” when the land they’re standing on was stolen in the first place?
  • Moving on.
  • The director of the nation’s top public health agency is out after less than one month in the job. HHS officials did not explain why Susan Monarez is no longer with the agency.
  • And now there’s a standoff. Monarez is refusing to depart her role unless Dumpy himself removes her. An infectious disease specialist who was confirmed as CDC chief just a month ago, Monarez claims that as a presidential appointee, Senate-confirmed officer, only the president himself can fire her.
  • Let’s cut to the real issue. Monarez believes in the value of vaccines; her boss, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., does not.
  • In somewhat related news…
  • Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has sued Dump in an effort to overturn his attempt to fire her, launching an unprecedented legal battle that could significantly reshape the Fed’s longstanding political independence.
  • Some background: no president has sought to fire a Fed governor in the institution’s 112-year history until Dump fired Cook via a social post on Monday.
  • The Supreme Court has signaled that the president can’t fire Fed officials over policy differences, but he can do so “for cause,” typically meaning misconduct or neglect of duty.
  • There has been no such accusation or evidence of this.
  • Note that both of the recent controversial firings were women… one Hispanic, one Black.
  • Let’s move on.
  • Did you think we forgot about the Epstein files and the proof of Donnie Dump’s history of raping children?
  • We did not, and neither have most Americans. A recent Quinnipiac poll shows that 67% of voters disapprove of the way the Dump administration is handling the Epstein files. Just 19% approve.
  • And 73% think the Justice Department is not being transparent in the way it's handling the Epstein investigation. That number of people includes Republicans, Democrats, and independents.
  • Show us the files, you fat rapist piece of shit pedophile.
  • And now, The Weather: “Jobber To The Stars Pt. 1” by Jobber
  • Let’s do a chart.
  • It’s the end of August 1976, and I am just about to start third grade at Ladera Linda Elementary School in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Note: in my list of Facebook friends, I can count probably 8-10 people from that third grade class who I still know, and most seem like very nice grown-up people in their mid/late 50s now.
  • This is a shockingly good chart, and I’m not just saying that for nostalgia’s sake. The top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles at the time had the better aspects of disco/funk, cool pop-rock tunes, some iconic soft rock, and more. I can sing nearly every one of these tunes even today.
  • 1. Don't Go Breaking My Heart (Elton John & Kiki Dee). 2. You Should Be Dancing (Bee Gees). 3. Let 'em In (Wings). 4. You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine (Lou Rawls). 5. I'd Really Love To See You Tonight (England Dan & John Ford Coley). 6. (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty (KC And The Sunshine Band). 7. Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry). 8. A Fifth Of Beethoven (Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band). 9. Get Closer (Seals & Crofts Featuring Carolyn Willis). 10. This Masquerade (George Benson). 11. Kiss And Say Goodbye (The Manhattans). 12. Baby, I Love Your Way (Peter Frampton). 13. Summer (War). 14. Say You Love Me (Fleetwood Mac). 15. Love Is Alive (Gary Wright). 16. Lowdown (Boz Scaggs). 17. Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel (part 1) (Tavares). 18. Rock And Roll Music (The Beach Boys). 19. With Your Love (Jefferson Starship). 20. Devil Woman (Cliff Richard).
  • From the Sports Desk… a deja vu moment in the NFL while teams complete their rosters for the upcoming season.
  • Four veteran players (all wide receivers) — Amari Cooper, Adam Thielen, Keenan Allen, and Brandin Cooks — just got traded back to the teams where they all respectively started their careers.
  • So once again, Cooper is a Raider, Thielen is a Viking, Allen is a Charger, and Cooks is a Saint. That’s weird, man. That’s some time machine shit.
  • Today in history… The Roman general Orestes forces western Roman Emperor Julius Nepos to flee his capital city, Ravenna (475). Fatimah, daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, dies (632). Pedro MenĂ©ndez de AvilĂ©s founds the oldest continuously European-occupied city in the continental United States near St. Augustine, Florida (1565). William Herschel discovers Saturn’s moon Enceladus (1789). The US takes possession of then-unoccupied Midway Atoll (1867). Caleb Bradham's beverage "Brad's Drink" gets a better brand name, being changed to “Pepsi-Cola" (1898). Italy declares war on Germany in WWI (1914). Nazi Germany begins its mass arrests of Jehovah's Witnesses, who are interned in concentration camps (1936). Toyota Motors becomes an independent company spun off from Toyota Industries (1937). Black teenager Emmett Till is brutally murdered in Mississippi, kicking off the civil rights movement (1955). Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gives his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech (1963). Cops and protestors clash at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago (1968).
  • August 28 is the birthday of writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749), physician George Whipple (1878), conductor Karl Böhm (1894), writer/illustrator Jack Kirby (1917), actor Donald O’Connor (1925), actress Roxie Roker (1929), MLB player/manager Lou Piniella (1943), drummer Danny Seraphine (1948), MLB player Ron Guidry (1950), actor Luis Guzmán (1956), actor Daniel Stern (1957), singer-songwriter Shania Twain (1965), actor Billy Boyd (1968), actor/singer-songwriter Jack Black (1969), actor Jason Priestly (1969), NHL player Pierre Turgeon (1969), singer LeAnn Rimes (1982), singer-songwriter Florence Welch (1986), and singer-songwriter Cassadee Pope (1989).

That’s all I’ve got. Try and be nice to each other. Except for Nazis and fascists. Hit those fuckers right in the face. But be nice to everyone else. Enjoy your day.

Random News: August 27, 2025

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s August 27, 2025, and it’s a Wednesday. I managed to re-tweak my lower back injury yesterday because I’m an idiot, but it’s not terrible, and I’m gonna try and have a normal work day and not dwell on it. Sometimes when things are shitty in some way, the one thing you don’t want to do is constantly focus on it. I refuse to.

  • I asked a question at the end of my report yesterday, which was inquiring in regard to your opinion whether or not the new U.S. Civil War has already begun.
  • None of us can legitimately and accurately answer that just yet. Before you even start, t’s important to qualify some things and make some definitions.
  • You hear a term like “civil war,” and your mind goes to a scene from 1863, with men firing rifles and horses pulling cannon brigades across dirt fields.
  • Or maybe you think of some dystopian modern equivalent, with hordes of MAGAs in red hats marching down a city street holding AR-15s, and black-clad Antifa operatives pelting them with Molotov cocktails, or some shit.
  • I’m not saying that scenario is out of the question at some point (though let’s hope not). But there are actions going on that could, in retrospect, seem like the early stages of civil war, or at least a version of it in the contemporary world.
  • For example, there’s the concept of a “slow civil war” that actually began on January 6, 2021 during the failed coup attempt.
  • And the long build from then to today, with armed troops from red states descending on blue cities. There are people out there with much more expertise than I who feel that we’re about one exchange of gunfire from open war, with Americans fighting Americans.
  • There are far too many nuances to this topic to try and cram into a single report. But in coming days, we’ll talk about the various forms a modern U.S. civil war could take.
  • Not all of them involve violence at all. Economic war, tech war, deepfake/AI/information war… we’ll look into it all.
  • But I’ll leave you with this for now. Fascism isn’t coming; it’s here now. And today — before it continues to progress, like a cancer on the nation — is the time to take it out before we lose our 250-year-old democracy entirely.
  • Let’s do some news.
  • Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Thomas Cullen threw out an absolutely ridiculous lawsuit the Dump administration filed against every federal judge in Maryland over an order slowing down efforts to swiftly deport people it believes are in the country illegally.
  • Side note: Cullen was a Dump appointee. Ha ha!
  • This is another in a long list of failures by the Dump administration to enact illegal rulings. You and me and everyone else here should be thankful for our Constitution.
  • The USA’s forefathers did indeed envision tyrants and dictators trying to take over the country, and made it so it wouldn’t be easy. This ruling is a nice setback for Dump’s cruel and immoral agenda.
  • The ruling highlighted the judiciary's increasing frustration with Dump's litigation tactics, which have included filing misconduct complaints against judges and stonewalling an order to provide details about the illegal deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
  • Dump’s Justice Department filed the case in June after the Maryland court adopted a standing order that automatically blocks for two business days the deportation of migrants in the state who file new habeas lawsuits challenging their detention.
  • Moving on.
  • Some outstanding news out of Iowa yesterday, where Democrat Catelin Drey defeated her Republican opponent, Christopher Prosch, in a special election in the Sioux City area.
  • What’s the big deal about that? Dump won the same 1st Senate district by 11 percentage points in November, just nine months ago. Today, Drey’s margin of victory is by 10 points.
  • You can consider that a 21-point swing. not only is this indicative of current and future voting trends, but Drey’s massive victory breaks the Republican supermajority in the Iowa state Senate.
  • Democrats will now hold 17 districts in the Iowa Senate compared to 33 seats held by Republicans — enough to break the two-thirds supermajority the GOP has wielded since 2022.
  • Get their asses. All of them.
  • Let’s move on.
  • Yesterday, Dumples the Hypocrisy Clown said that the federal government would seek the death penalty for murders committed in Washington, D.C.
  • Wanna hear the Stable Genius’s quote on the topic? Sure.
  • "Anybody murders something in the capital, capital punishment. Capital, capital punishment. If somebody kills somebody in the capital, Washington, D.C., we're going to be seeking the death penalty. And that's a very strong preventative."
  • You demented moron.
  • Okay, let’s start here: on January 6, 2021, multiple police officers were murdered at the Capitol. And what did you do, Donnie? Did you give their killers the death penalty?
  • No, you gave a blanket pardon to everyone who participated.
  • The District of Columbia hasn't executed anyone since 1957, after Robert Carter was convicted of fatally shooting an off-duty police officer.
  • Decades ago, D.C. had mandatory death sentences for first-degree murders, a policy the Supreme Court voided in the 1972 case ‘Furman v. Georgia’ when it found that the death penalty was being applied in an unconstitutionally arbitrary manner.
  • And the D.C. City Council abolished the death penalty in 1981.
  • Moving on with some breaking news.
  • Federal prosecutors failed to secure a grand jury indictment against Sean Dunn, the hero in the pink shirt who threw his sandwich at a federal agent.
  • Ha ha!
  • The U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. sought to charge Dunn with felony assault of an officer for the August 10 sandwich lobbing incident. It is not clear if prosecutors will try again to obtain an indictment of Dunn.
  • Of note: it’s extremely rare for a grand jury to decline to return an indictment. And it’s rarer still in a high-profile case that the government has aggressively promoted in the media, as the DOJ did after Dunn’s arrest.
  • Ha ha again, you fucking dumbasses. Viva la sandwich!
  • Moving on to more breaking news, this time from the Fascism Desk…
  • This morning, Dump’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that his department is taking management of Union Station, the main transportation hub in Washington, away from Amtrak.
  • They claim the reason is that Union Station, located within walking distance of the U.S. Capitol, had “fallen into disrepair” when it should be a “point of pride” for the city.
  • But this is just more fascist bullshit. Dump thinks he can monitor the movement of everyone getting in and out of our cities.
  • Like it’s 1943 and he’s Benito Mussolini. Control the railways, Donnie!
  • Moron.
  • While we’re here at the Fascism Desk, what are those hundreds of National Guard troops doing while they’re in D.C.?
  • They’re on sanitation and landscaping patrol. No, I’m serious.
  • Dump described D.C. as a violent, lawless dystopia. So he brought in the troops to smooth mounds of mulch around the city’s treasured Tidal Basin cherry trees.
  • National Guard troops are typically called upon to respond to emergencies in the USA or to deploy overseas. Now they’re landscaping.
  • Weren’t there already people whose job it was to keep D.C. pretty? Of course. Typically, this sort of custodial work has been done by the National Park Service.
  • But then Dump gutted the federal workforce. The service used to have 200 people assigned to maintain thousands of acres of trees and gardens in D.C., and now there are 20.
  • So the National Guard is now picking up trash, mowing lawns, and scrubbing graffiti off walls.
  • Slow clap for Dumpy.
  • News from the International Desk…
  • Today, Denmark’s foreign minister summoned the top U.S. diplomat in the country for talks after least three people with connections to Dump have been carrying out covert influence operations in Greenland.
  • Public broadcaster DR said Danish government and security sources which it didn’t name, as well as unidentified sources in Greenland and the U.S., believe that at least three American nationals with connections to Dump have been carrying out covert influence operations in the territory.
  • One of those people allegedly compiled a list of U.S.-friendly Greenlanders, collected names of people opposed to Dump, and got locals to point out cases that could be used to cast Denmark in a bad light in American media.
  • Two others have tried to nurture contacts with politicians, businesspeople, and locals.
  • Assholes.
  • Moving on to more Asshole News…
  • Even Fox News has had enough for Demented Don’s bullshit.
  • Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume slammed Dump’s executive order that directed the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute people for burning the American flag.
  • Hume wrote, “George HW Bush ran against flag burning in 1988 and spent a whole week campaigning on the issue. But he called for a constitutional amendment to ban the practice. He didn’t pretend he could ban it by an executive order that flies in the face of constitutional speech protections. C’mon man.”
  • Snort.
  • A note from the Health Desk…
  • We’re having a huge surge in a new variant of COVID here in the Los Angeles area.
  • And it’s coming on strong right at a time where the Dump administration has fucked up a fantastic vaccination program that ran smoothly under Joe Biden.
  • Los Angeles county has reported a jump in the coronavirus concentrations detected in wastewater in recent weeks. L.A. County also has reported an increase in patients hospitalized with COVID.
  • The rate at which COVID lab tests came back positive in L.A. County is 12.6% for the week that ended Aug. 16, up from 7.6% a month earlier. In Orange County, it's 14.4%, up from 8.1%.
  • The new subvariant is XFG, nicknamed Stratus. It accounts for the vast majority of strains seen in wastewater. The only good news is that it’s another Omicron subvariant, so previous infections with other Omicron variants may offer some residual protection.
  • But you can always be reinfected. And the more times you get COVID, the more likely you end up with longterm severe effects.
  • Be safe. Be vaccinated. Mask up when it makes sense, especially for seniors and immune-compromised people.
  • Some big news from the Entertainment Desk…
  • And this is so big that actual-ass television media cut away from their stories of war and politics and famine and disasters for the breaking news when it hit yesterday morning.
  • NFL tight end Travis Kelce and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift announced their engagement via an Instagram post.
  • Tay-Tay wrote, "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” as a caption with a photo that seems to show the two tall people in an enchanted forest, with Kelce down on one knee in the traditional engagement pose. Cute.
  • The couple has been dating for the past two years. Swift is a 14-time Grammy winner; Kelce is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, a 10-time NFL all-star, and a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
  • They are both 35 years old, born within a couple months of each other in 1989.
  • Congrats, you crazy, wealthy kids. What’s that? Oh, Kelce’s net worth is in the range of $60 million; Swift’s net worth is slightly higher at $1.6 billion. She’s the second most wealthy musician on the planet behind only Jay-Z.
  • And now, The Weather: “Jasmine Blossoms” by Hand Habits
  • Let’s do a chart.
  • It’s 61 years ago, at the end of August 1964. I won’t be born for almost five years. Where am I?
  • This is the heading toward the height of the “British Invasion” in pop music. Life in the USA is pretty good, though JFK had been assassinated about a year earlier, and this country is about to go through a massive cultural shift.
  • Civil rights activism, the Vietnam war, the hippie/flower child movement, street protests, and the other defining aspects of the decade are yet to come. For the moment, this top of the Billboard 200 albums chart is still varied and yet representational of the times.
  • 1. A Hard Day's Night (Soundtrack) (The Beatles). 2. Something New (The Beatles). 3. Getz/Gilberto (Stan Getz And Joao Gilberto Featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim). 4. All Summer Long (The Beach Boys). 5. Everybody Loves Somebody (Dean Martin). 6. Funny Girl (Barbra Streisand). 7. Hello, Dolly (Louis Armstrong). 8. Hello, Dolly! (Original Cast). 9. The Unsinkable Molly Brown (Soundtrack). 18. I Don't Want To Be Hurt Anymore (Nat King Cole). 19. Honey In The Horn (Al Hirt). 20. The Beatles' Second Album (The Beatles).
  • From the Sports Desk… it’s one week from tomorrow that the regular NFL season begins.
  • More sports media orgs are getting in their final preseason power rankings. CBS Sports predicts the coming season as follows. It might be fin to come back to this and see how close they were (or weren’t).

We will continue our discussion about the nascent civil war in the USA in future issues of Zak’s Random News. I’m going to go have a typical work day now with things to create and meetings to attend. Sticking with the normal shit is important. You may soon wish you had the option of being normal. Enjoy your day.

Random News: August 26, 2025

DISCLAIMER: Zak's Random News is very random and doesn't cover many things, and not everything may be accurate, because I'm just some guy. Go find a real news source.

Good morning. It’s August 26, 2025, and it’s a Tuesday. It’s amazing how the time of sunrise changes over the course of August. At the start of the month, I was waking up at 6am to daylight. A few weeks later, it’s practically still nighttime when my alarm goes off. That’s what we get for living on a tilted sphere in space.

  • Let’s do some news.
  • When I talk about the GOP and in particular the MAGA World being the most hypocritical slice of society in history, here’s a great example of what I’m talking about.
  • As you know, Dumpy commanded the state of Texas to gerrymander their congressional districts to try and get rid of five predominantly Democratic voter areas.
  • In response, the state of California did the same thing.
  • And then yesterday, Dump said that the Department of Justice will sue California over Gov. Gavin Newsom’s efforts to draw a new, Democratic-leaning congressional map. It’s the same thing that Texas did… but Dumpy was’t expecting it, because he’s not a smart man.
  • Dumpy whined, “I think I’m going to be filing a lawsuit pretty soon, and I think we’re going to be very successful in it. We’re going to be filing it through the Department of Justice. That’s going to happen.”
  • Newsom promptly responded: “BRING IT.”
  • Ha ha!
  • Dumpy already fucked himself on this supposed lawsuit via his own words last week. He wrote, “The incredible people of Texas will have the opportunity to elect five more Republicans to Congress, thanks to the passage of their much more fair new Map — A BIG WIN for Republicans in Texas, and across the Country!”
  • The Justice Department had no response to requests for comment on Dump’s remarks.
  • In other redistricting news…
  • Yesterday, Utah District Judge Dianna Gibson ordered lawmakers in the state to draw a new congressional map, delivering a win for Democrats and reminding state legislators across the country that they don’t get the only say on political boundaries.
  • The roots of Utah’s redistricting fight stretch back seven years. In 2018, voters placed an initiative on the ballot requiring the state to draw lines neutrally.
  • Voters approved the measure, but two years later GOP state lawmakers repealed it and replaced it with a law that gave themselves all the power on how to draw lines. They adopted a map in 2021, and all four of the state’s congressional seats are now held by Republicans.
  • Gibson ordered the GOP-dominated legislature to draw a new map by September 24 that adheres to the redistricting standards established by the 2018 voter initiative.
  • And that very well might mean another seat added to the Democratic side of the aisle. In a situation where only three seats give the GOP an advantage, this is huge news.
  • Moving on to some news from the Immigration Desk…
  • Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was wrongly deported in March before being brought back to the U.S. to face new criminal charges, was taken into immigration custody after checking in with ICE at its office in Baltimore yesterday morning.
  • He’s currently being held at a detention center in Virginia, where he is again facing deportation.
  • U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, who has been overseeing his deportation case, said at a habeas hearing yesterday afternoon that the federal government is "absolutely forbidden" from deporting him for the time being.
  • ”Your clients are absolutely forbidden at this juncture to remove Mr. Abrego Garcia from the continental United States," she told government attorneys.
  • So at least through tomorrow, the federal government is currently blocked from deporting him, and Judge Xinis said she is also considering extending a temporary restraining order blocking Abrego Garcia from being deported to Uganda, where the government has indicated he may be sent despite his designated country of choice being Costa Rica.
  • Xinis also said she will order the government not to move Abrego Garcia from the Virginia detention center where's he's currently being held, and to make sure he has access to counsel.
  • There are so many illegal aspects to Abrego Garcia’s case. His lawyer was with him while he was detained again yesterday.
  • "We asked the ICE officer what the reason for his detention was, the ICE officer didn't answer. We asked the ICE officer for a copy of any paperwork that's being served on him today, the ICE officer wouldn't commit to even giving us that paperwork," he said.
  • Keep in mind that Abrego Garcia, who was born in El Salvador, was deported in March to that country’s notorious CECOT mega-prison despite a 2019 court order barring his deportation to that country due to fear of persecution.
  • We’ll continue to keep an eye on this man and the hideous treatment he’s undergoing due to a personal vendetta by Dictator Dump.
  • Let’s move on.
  • Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the Republican who leads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has issued a subpoena to the estate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein seeking documents and other material as part of its ongoing examination of the government's investigation into Epstein.
  • The subpoena demands the co-executors of Epstein's estate turn over to the House committee more than a dozen categories of documents and communications, including material from 1990 through August 2019 that references all presidents and vice presidents, videos taken from Epstein's properties, and listings in his contact and address books.
  • Lawmakers are also seeking entries contained within a leather-bound book put together by Epstein's pimp, Ghislaine Maxwell, for his 50th birthday. They also want the 2008 non-prosecution agreement reached with the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Florida, as well as Epstein's will.
  • Dumpy called the letter "fake" and filed a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper, its parent company, and media mogul Rupert Murdoch over the story.
  • Moving on.
  • It didn’t take long to test Dumpy’s ridiculous proclamation that burning the U.S. flag was somehow illegal.
  • Yesterday evening, a 22-year combat army veteran named Jay Carey purposefully set fire to a U.S. flag across the street from the White House to protest Dump’s anti-flag-burning executive order.
  • Carey was arrested in Lafayette Square, but not on grounds of violating the order — or of burning the flag. Instead he was charged with violating a law against setting fires at federal parks.
  • Why? Because Dump’s executive order isn’t worth wiping your ass with, much less trying to enforce.
  • As we mentioned yesterday, the Supreme Court has ruled that burning the flag is a mode of symbolic speech protected under the First Amendment.
  • Let me say this: the First Amendment protects many kinds of speech and action. You may not agree with what’s being said or done. For example, it allows for Nazis and fundamentalist Christian organizations to hold marches and rallies with signs that would disgust decent human beings.
  • But it is still protected. Whether you agree with flag burning or not, it is protected, and it’s very important for our freedom of speech to remain intact, no matter what some asshole dictator says or does.
  • “I fought for every one of your rights,” said Carey to about two dozen people gathered near him in the park. he went on to say that no president had the right to make an order infringing on the First Amendment.
  • He’s right.
  • Some news from the International Desk…
  • Israel is acting like the same terrorist organizations that they claim to despise.
  • Yesterday, they struck one of the main hospitals in the Gaza Strip with a missile, and then fired another as journalists and rescue workers rushed to the scene, killing at least 20 people and wounding scores more.
  • At least five journalists were among those killed. Israel fucking sucks.
  • It was among the deadliest of several Israeli strikes that have hit both hospitals and journalists over the course of the 22-month war that was sparked by Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack.
  • Asked about the strike and journalists being among the victims, the Israel Defense Forces issued a statement saying it had carried out an attack and adding that it would "conduct an initial inquiry as soon as possible," adding that it regretted "any harm to uninvolved individuals and does not target journalists as such."
  • I don’t believe anything Israel says anymore.
  • The journalists killed in Israel’s attack include Hossam al-Masri, who worked for the Reuters news agency, Mohammed Salama, who worked for Al Jazeera, and freelance journalists Maryam Abu Daqqa and Moaz Abu Taha, who did independent work for the Associated Press and others.
  • Moving on.
  • Yesterday, Dumpy fired Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors — a dramatic move after months of public attacks against the central bank.
  • Dump accused Cook of making false statements on mortgage documents, actions he claimed were "gross negligence" and "potentially criminal."
  • The move is an early test of The Old Orange Asshole’s power to terminate members of the Federal Reserve. Under federal law, Fed board members serve for 14-year terms and can only be fired by the president "for cause."
  • Cook has served on the Fed since 2022, meaning her current term runs until 2038. And she is not accepting Dump’s action.
  • Cook said in a statement that “no cause exists under the law, and he (Dump) has no authority” to remove her from the job.
  • She continued, “I will not resign. I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022.”
  • We will, of course, keep a close eye on that situation as well.
  • Let’s move on with one more story of that piece of shit in the Oval Office.
  • Yesterday, Dumpy said he wants to return the Department of Defense to its prior name: the Department of War.
  • What a douchebag.
  • Dump said the change would likely be made "over the next week or so." Hours later, he said he'd leave it up to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth: "We'll do it a couple of more times. And if everyone likes it, we'll make that change."
  • Asked whether Congress would need to sign off on restoring the agency's old name, since lawmakers had passed the initial renaming, Dump said he didn't think so: "We're just going to do it. I'm sure Congress will go along if we need that. I don't think we even need that."
  • Of course he doesn’t. The current Congress is packed with people who line up to eat his ass and thank him for it.
  • Okay, let’s just move on.
  • Something we find far too acceptable in this modern era: AI is often straight-up wrong.
  • Over the weekend, author Neal Stephenson had his Facebook account suspended by its parent company Meta.
  • The reason? He’s suspected of impersonating someone noteworthy.
  • Facebook’s security AI cannot discern the difference between a bad person impersonating someone else and the actual fucking person. How many times have you (or your friends) had content flagged for seemingly no reason at all?
  • It’s because we already put far too much reliance on computer software (which is what AI is, despite the glamorous-sounding name) to be smart. And yes, it’s getting somewhat smarter.
  • But so is my cat, and yet I don’t rely on him to do crucial tasks that are beyond his capabilities.
  • Stephenson is an author that my Second Life friends should know well, since in his 1992 novel ‘Snow Crash,’ he coined the concept of the metaverse and predicted a virtual reality–based Internet that SL’s founders would later use as inspiration.
  • Moving on.
  • Some news from the Nature Desk…
  • New data shows that great white sharks are spending more time in the chilly waters off New England and Canada's Atlantic coast.
  • Sightings of great whites are becoming more commonplace is areas like Maine and Nova Scotia where they were previously rare. Now they’ve increased by up to four times the previous rates.
  • Why? Well, those waters remain cooler than the oceans to the south, which are getting hotter and hotter due to human-assisted climate change.
  • The same reason we’re having more (and more severe) hurricanes and storms.
  • So the food chain moves along with the more hospitable water temperatures. Seals move north to get their food, and sharks — who eat the seals — make the journey as well.
  • You shown’t be worried about the sharks; attacks on humans are still very rare. But you should definitely be worried about the reason they’re seeking cooler waters.
  • Moving on.
  • A note of ridicule from the Entertainment Desk…
  • Aaron Lewis, the singer of the band Staind — who were last relevant from a single pop hit in 2001 — decided to actually listen to the lyrics of Bruce Springsteen’s iconic song “Born in the USA.”
  • On the topic of Springsteen, Lewis said, “The fact that he duped us all with one of the most anti-American songs ever and called it 'Born in the USA' as some sort of celebration of how great it is to be born in the USA. I'm angry at myself for not seeing it for so long.”
  • If I was Lewis, I’d be angry at myself just for being an idiot. That’s a plenty good enough reason.
  • “Born in the USA” is on a short list of songs that are almost always misinterpreted. Like many great works of American artists, it’s a protest song, not some kind of patriotic, jingoistic anthem.
  • It tells the story of a disillusioned Vietnam War veteran who returns home to a country that has left him behind and fails to support him. It describes the economic hardships, social rejection, and lack of support veterans faced in the post-war era.
  • If telling the truth is anti-American in Lewis’s view, maybe he’s the one who needs to take a look in the mirror.
  • Relevant side note: some of the other most misinterpreted pop songs in history include “Hallelujah” (Leonard Cohen), “Every Breath You Take” (The Police), “Revolution” (The Beatles), and many others.
  • These songs don’t mean what some people think they mean.

  • From the Sports Desk… you know how I rant against NFL preseason because it’s a violent sport where people get hurt, and ending your season before it even starts is the most stupid possible scenario for any athlete?
  • Over the weekend, it happened to my fucking team when backup quarterback Aiden O’Connell broke his wrist in the final preseason game for the Las Vegas Raiders.
  • That left the Raiders with just rookie Cam Miller to backup starter Geno Smith. So yesterday, the Raiders traded for Browns backup QB Kenny Pickett… a wise choice, but an unfortunate reason to be forced to bring on a new QB.
  • Side note: today is the deadline for all NFL teams to pare down to their final 53-man roster. By tomorrow, you’ll know who’s actually on your football team.
  • In other Sports Desk news…
  • Congrats to Taiwan, who beat Nevada 7-0 in the Little League World Series championship. Pitcher Lin Chin-Tse retired the first 13 batters he faced and allowed just one hit in five innings.
  • Taiwan’s victory ends a 29-year title drought for the country. Well done, kids.

That’s a lot of stuff, but it’s good to know many things. In the coming days, there’s a topic I want to bring up that maybe you want to think about beforehand and form some opinions. I’m going to ask you whether or not the new U.S. Civil War has already begun, and I’m going to tell you what I think. But in the meantime, give that some thought. Enjoy your day.
